Political System
Discourse - Reason for Recall
Recall has become a tool of the discontented and the defeated to oppose and fault a democratic process by politicizing it.
MPPs critiqued the bill Mr. Toby Barrett presented 8 April 2004, on account of accountability in terms of conduct; of introducing the Integrity Commissioner's role into a political argument regarding a member's conduct; on account of percentage of the voting system to assuage the minority; of the removal of a member from the caucus if that member has transgressed.
Recall is not solely about transgression or conduct. Both these malfeasances may be referred to the Courts or to the Integrity Commissioner removed from political interests. It is about special interests that politicians become subservient to them. To oust officials who become subsidiaries to special interests at the expense of public concerns. It is not a political opportunity, to follow percentage of voters. It is an issue based on the nature of discontent; a non-partisan process that affects the whole of society. It is complementary to the electoral system of proportional representation, but that alone is not sufficient to dissuade a member of corruption while in office.
